When Japanese immigrants sailed the Pacific Ocean and landed in Peru, a very special thing happened. Nikkei cuisine was born. The Japanese took their culinary techniques and applied them to the ingredients they found in Peru. This fusion has resulted in the most interesting, unusual and delectable dishes you might ever find.
Bamboo Mat is the brain child of Dennis Gobjila (formerly of Chotto Matte) and Victor Rosca (formerly of Sushi Samba). Their small restaurant in Leyton was reviewed by Grace Dent of the Guardian and with the tidal wave of success that happened after that they opened their second restaurant in the chain in East Village, Stratford.
Now this is a hidden gem in the truest sense of the word. The restaurant is about a 10-minute walk from Westfield Stratford so it’s not in plain sight and I would truly hate for you to miss it!
The menu offers a selection of starters, small plates, sushi and mains, all designed to be shared. There are big hitting flavours from the yuzu, tigers milk and yellow aji.
Tiradito is a classic example of Nikkei cooking. The raw fish being marinated in lime and aji resulting in explosive flavours. The Yellowtail here was fresh and delightful as was the Deluxe Ceviche with so many types of fish I lost count.
If you love a bit of drama then the interiors scream Nikkei with splashes of modern neon and street art engaging a fairly dark interior which comes alive at night. Coupled with the Bunsen Burner scorching the salmon nigiri table side it creates an exciting vibe to match the dishes.
Although it may be tempting to fill up on the small plates, leave some room for the melt in the mouth ox cheek. It literally fell apart on top of the yuzu mash and was so rich in flavour and texture I was glad I was sharing it. This along with the Wagyu Steak was cooked perfectly.
There are lovely touches throughout, from a cute private dining area for hire to the unique individual crockery. You can just tell you are in a place where the cooking comes from the heart and you are the guest.
A great new edition to East Village which I am sure the locals hope remains a hidden gem.
