Happy Avocado Day 31st July

Let’s avo conversation about Holy Moly’s Guacamole! Fifteen things you might not know about avocados.

In particular, Holy Moly avocados. Plus some quick and delicious Guacamole and Smashed Avocado summer recipes.

Fact 1: Proudly made in Colombia – the country’s lush mountainous, tropical rain forests are the perfect natural environment for growing our oil-rich delicious Hass avocados.

Fact 2: Colombia’s unique formula of sunlight, natural rainwater, nourishing soil, and mild temperatures gives our Hass avocados their creamy, rich flavour and delicious-ness.

Fact 3: We harness the diverse landscapes of Colombia growing our avocados throughout the country, taking good care of the altitude, rainfall and sunshine to get the best from the land without practicing forced farming methods – everything we do is natural.

Fact 4: We use 100% ‘wonky’ avocados ie. fruit that cannot be sold for export either because of the shape, size or skin is below ‘export’ standards and would otherwise go to waste.

Fact 5: Our avocado production uses 80% natural rainfall as the main source of irrigation. The remaining 20% of water required will either come from collected rainwater or mains, dependent on orchard, location, time of year and the growing altitude.

Fact 6: We prefer to source our products from smaller family-owned businesses, and we source from businesses that are vertically integrated and take direct ownership of avocado growing, harvesting and dip making.

Fact 7: We only partner with producers that have excellent worker welfare. We insist on freedom of employment, living wages are paid, preferential working hours and excellent working conditions.

Fact 8: We work with growers who support the ‘Zero Deforestation Agreement’ which promotes a higher level of monitoring protected areas, supports sustainable production and forest conservation.

Fact 9: Avocados are very particular about where they grow and what time of the year they taste their best. That is why throughout the year Holy Moly prefers to source from Mexico as well. In the British summer, the fruit is best coming from Colombia and in the British winter, the fruit is best from Mexico and Colombia.

Fact 10: We only ever ship or truck our products from origin to the United Kingdom, we never airfreight our products. We never transport the skin and stone of our avocado products, we only transport the edible parts of the fruit, thus reducing our carbon output.

Fact 11: All the ingredients in our avocado products are grown, harvested and made into Holy Moly dips from their original country or neighbouring country of origin. We use local ingredients to reduce unnecessary food miles at source.

Fact 12: We use ‘cold-press’ technology to lock in freshness and naturally extend the life of an avocado. Whereas a whole ‘fresh’ avocado can be 7 weeks old by the time it is force ripened and delivered to UK retailers, our Holy Moly avocados are only 2 weeks old by the time they are packed and cared for by our ’cold-press’ technology.

Fact 13: We only work with regulated suppliers (via the local governments) for the sustainable growing of avocados in Colombia and Mexico that stops deforestation linked to avocado growing. We also promote the replanting of indigenous trees, one scheme plants 40,000+ trees per year.

Fact 14: Part of the inedible avocado skin and stone from the production of Holy Moly is repurposed and used to make avocado oil. We also use other food waste (onion skin & jalapeno stalks etc.) for composting. This maximizes the harvest for the growers and reduces unnecessary food wastage.

Fact 15: Our Mexican avocados are grown in the heart of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, amid more than 100 volcanoes. The ash from these volcanoes supplies the surrounding area’s soil with precious nutrients, which in turn create a particularly fertile landscape in which avocado trees can thrive and reduces the need for additional fertilizers.
