Flamboyant Art Deco Leeds Restaurant Showcase An Exciting Menu

Sometimes we hit the jackpot when visiting and reviewing restaurants, and the Grand Pacific is that one unique place. We couldn’t be happier sampling some dishes from their menu.

We sent our writer, Rachel McAlley to the Queens Hotel in Leeds to try out the seasonal menu at the Grand Pacific Restaurant.

My first impressions were simply ‘Wow’, as the bar and restaurant are beautifully presented with an old-worldly design from the art deco era. Moreover, golden lighting adorns the bar area, with deep dark wooden bar with gold, and ornate plush bar stools. The feel is pure luxury, a class above anywhere else!

It plays homage to an era where high society elites would meet for high tea, or to enjoy pre-dinner cocktails before taking in a theatre show. Equally, you can imagine that Lords and Ladies ate and drank here in the 1920’s.

Moving into the 2020’s and the Grand Pacific has evolved somewhat into a bar and restaurant where people take meetings in the day, have lunch with colleagues, and dinner with family and friends. It’s less high society and more the place to be seen. With its extensive cocktail menu, mixologists, and excellent waiting staff busy looking after guests. A place to enjoy, relax and unwind after work.

I was taken to my table in the restaurant and presented with a great menu, filled with different dishes from around the world. Firstly, I opted for a Tiger Prawn Cocktail to start. Served beautifully in a glass basket with tiger prawns hanging over the edge, it was delicious. Additionally, the prawns and salad were dressed with a Kimchi Marie rose sauce, which was a taste sensation!

Secondly, keeping within the theme from the sea, for my main course I chose Tempura Szechuan Sea Bass. Another fusion-style fish dish, this time the Sea Bass was served alongside Sweet Potato, Pineapple, Cucumber Pearls, and Miso. The fish was cooked to perfection, it was flaky, delicate, and perfectly white.

Thirdly, a couple of side dishes that I tried were the Roast Broccoli with Honey, Miso, and Sesame, plus Thick Cut Chips with Curry Salt. The Broccoli was the best I have eaten in a long time, and it was definitely the Miso that made it taste so good.

Now, at this point I was actually very full, but the lovely waitress suggested that I should try to find room for one of the desserts. I am so glad she did, because the Mango Soufflé was sublime, so much so I could have cried. This giant soufflé was served alongside Coconut Ice Cream (which was black and exotic with flecks of gold leaf), and a jug of Passion Fruit Syrup. Furthermore, I am so happy that I ordered it as it lit up my evening.

My dinner had sadly ended, much to my dismay as I wanted the soufflé to last forever. But, as they say, ‘all good things must come to an end’!
