When it comes to choice, we’ve never had it so good as far as premium rum and other spirits are concerned. The only problem is being able to separate the great from the good, however, a game changing start-up has set out to do just that.
Established in 2016, Craft Rum Club is the brainchild of entrepreneurs Kevin Beament and Donna Waite, who wanted to share their passion for the world’s best rums with the rest of the UK. Subscription to the service provides a monthly, bi-monthly or quarterly membership for £39.95 and gives you access to a range of limited edition rums, ranging from spiced to gold and dark.
Each full-sized 70cl bottle of rum comes with a selection of mixers, garnishes and snacks to make for the perfect home tasting session. We tried their July box for size and found the contents to be pretty impressive.
The star of the show was the Foursquare Spiced Rum, a versatile Bajan rum that’s blessed with hints of cinnamon, nutmeg and vanilla. Perfect on the rocks or mixed into a classic mojito, it’s a complex rum that commands attention.
Then came the mixers, which included sugar syrup, lime juice and more surprisingly, a bottle of Thatcher’s Cloudy Apple Cider. I’d never thought to mix cider with rum, but the Haze Daiquiri recipe featured in the Craft Rum Club magazine turned out to be quite the cocktail.
Garnished with a slice of apple, it makes for a refreshing summery tipple that will have you coming back for more. The gourmet tortilla chips from Manomasa proved to be the ideal accompaniment to the cocktail and are well worth seeking out from your local supermarket.
If you’re looking to take your love for rum to connoisseur level, then Craft Rum Club is an excellent way to discover a world of rum that goes beyond your local supermarket. We can’t wait to see what they drop in their next subscription box.
