One of the first things I look for in a restaurant is exactly that, the ‘look’. Whilst taste is important, I always find the ambience and setting really helps make my tastebuds feel alive and East 59th doesn’t disappoint in either criteria.
We started the evening with a couple of cocktails. I of course, after seeing ‘Pornstar Martini’ on the cocktail menu elected for just that, followed by the 59th Fizz which is the perfect blend of sweet (elderflower) and dry (gin and prosecco) to get into the swing of things.
Being vegetarian, I am always interested to see what options are available and how businesses are accommodating to dietary requirements. The staff on service on this particular evening were beyond helpful and I eventually chose Nachos to start (which were a generous sized portion to say the least), followed by a Halloumi ‘Caesar’ Salad for my main course. One of my, and I am sure many others, ‘food fears’ is that the portions will be miniscule meaning I’m left feeling hungry and down a further tenner spent on a regretful takeaway on the way home. East 59th however, takes good care of you. The halloumi was chargrilled to perfection and the dressing was stunning – I’ve been thinking about it ever since!
My foodie in crime selected the Tempura Prawns for his starter and Crispy Chicken Burger for main. Both were polished off in a timely fashion – which I think always speaks volume on taste and enjoyment (he did also mention the prawns were stunning). Did I mention the truffle fries? An absolute must to accompany any main as they were just the right balance of rich and savoury.
Given we were out for a weekday treat, I made sure there was just enough room left for dessert. After careful critique of the menu we decided to share both the Waffle Sandwich and Double Chocolate Brownie – I never actually managed to get a spoonful of the brownie (what does that say), but can absolutely vouch for the deliciousness of the Waffle Sandwich, which was sweet without being too sickly and cooked to perfection.
To top it all off, East 59th boasts a botanical rooftop terrace which can be enjoyed in both Summer and Winter with heat lamps. We decided to have one last nightcap to enjoy being out of the house for an evening. The venue was COVID-19 proofed with all staff wearing protective masks and clear instructions to help make guests feel safe but whilst making us feel we were on a ‘normal’ night out.
We will definitely be back.
