An Adventure Filled Day at North Yorkshire Water Park

What a wonderful day out for families of all ages at North Yorkshire Water Park. We sent our writer Rachel McAlley to test the waters (pun intended) at this fabulous open-air site!

Words by Rachel McAlley

We couldn’t have picked a better day to visit North Yorkshire Water Park, the sun was shining, it was a gloriously warm afternoon, and there was a slight breeze.

The water park isn’t too far from Scarborough, on the A170, the ideal location to spend a day out with the family. We arrived and parked in the car park, next to the Aqua Park – a brilliant place for people watching. We got our bags out of the car and headed to check-in, to collect wristbands for two activities we booked.

Our first activity was Stand Up Paddle Boarding, this took us to a different lake away from the Aqua Park. We were given a safety talk and instructions on how to paddle board for the first time. We also collected our wetsuits and life jackets before we were allowed into the water. After just 10 minutes of a health and safety update and a brief lesson we were off.

Now, when I say we, I actually mean my daughter and my fiancé, because I was the designated photographer! They enjoyed every single second of paddle boarding. Between them they managed to spend an hour on their boards, both were successful in standing before falling in the lake. All the equipment is supplied by North Yorkshire Water Park, all we needed to take were our swimsuits and towels.

Plenty To Do

Also on the same paddle boarding lake visitors could choose to do plenty of other activities. The park offers open water swimming, the chance to hire pedalos, or hire mini electric ships, and there is the option to learn how to sail. Visitors can also book kayaking (single or tandem) lessons, and wind surfing lessons.

Once our time was up on the paddle boards a horn was sounded so that we knew to leave the lake for the next guests. It was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon, and we even enquired about becoming members as we had so much fun.

Between our activities we had spare time to explore, so we ordered coffee and cake to enjoy out on the terrace overlooking one of the lakes. We then went for a walk around the site.

There are cycle trails and walks for people to use whilst at the park. Moreover, they have a 2.5km all-terrain graveled lakeside track that you can use between your activities, or you can visit the park to just do the track, you don’t have to do any water sports.

If you’re more of an angler rather than an aqua sports fan, North Yorkshire Water Park offers 3 well-stocked fishing lakes including a coarse lake, a trout lake, and a predator lake. Equally, you can book a boat if you prefer to fish on the water rather than on the bank.

Finally, our last activity of the day was an hour on the Aqua Park, the most fun we have ever had in a wetsuit! Once again it was my daughter and fiancé who took part in this challenge. They had a safety briefing, donned their life jackets, and were escorted to a jumping platform high above the lake.

After jumping in the lake they swam across to the first of many inflatable obstacles. There were climbing walls, huge slides, trampolines, balance bars, rockers, rollers, and blast bags – it was a total wipeout course of absolute fun.

The screams of laughter, shouts of delight, and general merriment were a sign that they were having the best time ever.

The Aqua Park lake was also open for Wake Boarding 1:1 tuition lessons. You can watch the Aqua Park and the Wake Boarding from the on site café terrace.
