Transitional Fashion – How to Take S/S Outfits to A/W

I know what you’re all thinking, a new season means a whole new wardrobe – which isn’t exactly a good thing especially when you’re on a budget on the weeks coming up to Christmas.

I’m all about spending money on yourself when you need a little treat, however, I also have a mortgage and two little fur babies to feed and so I’ve set myself a challenge this season to buy very little new clothes and instead, transition my summer outfits into the perfect A/W outfits. Transitional fashion is easier than you think.

One of my absolute top tips for transitional fashion this season is to layer, layer and you guessed it, layer some more. Starting with something easy, the dress pictured below was a classic LBD I bought in summer but actually didn’t get to wear much. Instead of packing it away until 2022, I decided I wanted to create a preppy look and pulled it together with a long-sleeved shirt underneath, tights and chunky black boots. When the weather really starts to turn, I’ll start wearing it with not only a jumper but also a cosy big overcoat.

Another example of transitional fashion from S/S to A/W is this midi skirt which I bought last year and have had a lot of wear out of in the last 12-18 months. Whilst in summer I would pair with sandals, a crop and maybe a light blazer, in the beginning months of autumn (when you can get away with no tights) I opt for chunky black boots, again, a shirt and knitted jumper as well as a blazer and/or coat depending on how cold the day is! Depending on what you’re doing, you can keep the midi skirts out with no tights for cosy pub lunches and drinks with the girls!

When it comes to shoes, it’s inevitable the sandals will have to go away for fear of frostbitten toes(!) however, everything else can stay. One investment piece I must suggest is a good fitting pair of knee-high brown or black boots to help you style and keep wearing your mini skirts and dresses.

Tennis skirts were a big trend earlier this year and so instead of putting them on your highest shelf to collect dust – take them out and put your knee-high boots on to enjoy them ‘fall fashion style’. The check tennis skirt below is perfect for autumn because of the pattern, and I’ve taken this from summer to autumn with a pair of black tights and a blazer.

Remember, trends are exactly that, trends. Instead of trying to keep up with what’s new, look to style the pieces you already own and love, to keep your budget and the planet in check!
