Laird Utility is the recently launched British urban and country heritage label from the duo that brought us Laird Hatters, husband and wife team Alex and Zofia Torun-Shaw. Conceptualised during lockdown the workwear label was developed as a natural progression to their successful label Laird Hatters.
Laird Utility was created to fill the need for hybrid dressing that arose during lockdown. Fuelled by founders Alex’s lifelong passion of workwear and Zofia’s determination to create a British-built sustainable brand, the two worked on creating Laird Utility. A label specialising in slow fashion wardrobe staples and affordable investment pieces, made to be worn and last a lifetime.
The heritage inspired debut collection includes iconic silhouettes including the brands interpretations of a classic British Field Jacket, Belted Utility Coat, Factory Dress, Work Skirt, Workshop Jacket and Dungger Dress. Each garment incorporates elements of uniform and military wear whilst adding an urban edge to it. Laird Utility allows the wearer to pick and mix different elements of the outfit to make it the perfect combination of smart casual.
The comfortable and hard-wearing collection includes versatile unisex pieces among some designed specifically for men and women, offering the ultimate mix of workwear and luxury.
The collection is all made in London using bold and neutral shades of merino & Harris Tweed, loden, military grade twill, corduroy, merino wool, and chambray denim from the best of British suppliers.
Indicative of the brand’s ethos, ‘creating long lasting garments for men and women whilst being produced in the most sustainable way’, Laird Utility manufactures every garment in their UK based factory and uses the highest quality natural fibres – ensuring that the brand’s carbon footprint is kept to a minimum.
With prices ranging from £100-£495, Laird Utility is a brand for those who are looking for affordable investment pieces, with each item designed to wear better over time.
Laird Hatters was founded in London in 2009 by Zofia, with Alex joining shortly after as its principal hat maker. Quickly opening its first shop offering ready-to-wear headwear in the same year, the brand now has three stores in Central London (Soho, Covent Garden & the Strand), one in Cambridge and one in Oxford. Laird Hatters hand make hats and caps of distinction for both men and women and its founders are passionate about sourcing the best British cloths and supporting British textile manufacturing and craftsmanship.
