Put down the glue! An expert answers your magnetic eyelash questions

With the eyelash industry set to be worth around $1.6bn in 2025, it’s safe to say the world is not stopping the quest in achieving longer and fuller lashes. There has been a boom in lash extensions, lengthening mascaras and the efficient magnetic eyelashes.

Magnetic lashes have gained a lot of popularity since their launch in 2014, and the innovative version of traditional strip lashes have taken the market by storm. If handled delicately and maintained properly, magnetic lashes can be worn more times than traditional or pre-glued falsies. They are a perfect option for beginners who struggle to apply standard strip lashes or if you just want a quick and easy eyelash enhancement.

Some people find magnetic eyelashes more flexible to apply and remove than strip or individual lashes, as the eyelashes stick to magnets and not glue. So, if you’re planning on trying something new for 2021, Saffron Hughes, Make-Up Artist at FalseEyelashes.co.uk, has answered every question you may have. Magnetic falsies will soon be an integral part of your makeup routine!

What are magnetic eyelashes?

There are two types of magnetic eyelashes, the traditional ‘sandwich’ lashes and the newer single lashes that require a magnetic liner to adhere to your eyelashes. They’re false eyelashes that you apply without the use of glue, but instead securing to each other and your lash line with tiny magnets. In short, you are ‘sandwiching’ your natural eyelashes between strips held together with a small magnetic force.

How do I apply magnetic eyelashes?

Applying magnetic lashes can take some time to master, but practise makes perfect. Unlike strip lashes, if you don’t get it right the first time, it’s easy to pull the strips apart and reposition. Don’t use tweezers to apply as the magnets will stick to them, making it a more difficult job! There are three simple steps to follow to guarantee a seamless blend with your natural lashes, leaving you with impressive results.

  • First, apply a coat of mascara to your natural lashes.
  • Once that’s dry, carefully remove the upper lash from the tray and gently place it on top of your eyelashes. Make sure it’s as close to your natural line as possible.
  • Holding the upper lash in place, slowly remove the lower lash from the tray and place it underneath your natural lash line with your eye open, until it connects with the upper lash.

How do I remove magnetic eyelashes?

Removing magnetic eyelashes is simple. Be careful not to pull the eyelashes straight off, this can be painful but may also reduce the longevity of your lashes. Instead use your index finger and thumb to softly slide the magnets away from each other. The trick is to remove them from the sides, from one corner to the other until you feel the magnets come apart and pull down towards your mouth. Focusing on each magnetic bond at a time will make them detach easily. You can then slowly place the lashes back into their packaging or a case to protect them until their next use.

How long can I reuse them?

One of the major benefits of magnetic lashes is that you can reuse them safely and hygienically as many times as you want. Traditional strip lashes require a lot of care if you want to reuse them due to the adhesive. No glue means that you don’t necessarily need to wash and clean them every time you apply them, they have a longer life span and require less maintenance.

Will magnetic eyelashes damage my own eyelashes?

Magnetic eyelashes won’t damage your own lashes if applied correctly and removed slowly. Remember to check the instructions written on the packaging.

Do I wear mascara with them?

Applying mascara to your falsies will limit their longevity and require more maintenance in the cleaning process. I would recommend to only apply mascara before applying your magnetic lashes.

Are magnetic eyelashes expensive?

There are luxe versions, but many brands have released high street packs. The cost savings are significant. For example, KISS magnetic lashes can be worn up to 20 times when looked after. The KISS lash and liner set works out at just under £18 meaning if you get 20 wears out of your lashes, that’s less than £1 per wear.
