How to Prep Your Skin for Holiday Travel and Harsh Climates

Nothing is better than the anticipation and excitement of the run-up to a holiday. However, whether you are looking for some much-needed summer sun or just want to go abroad to soak up the culture of another country – you must be aware of how different climates can impact your skin.

Holiday travel can take its toll on the skin, and often throw your usual skincare routine off course. Therefore, before you go it is a good idea to prepare your skin for the holiday travel and harsher climates that are to come. Read on as we look at some tips to help your skin whilst travelling, what you should be doing to protect your skin from strong sun and the damage this can cause if you don’t take the right precautions.

Before you travel

There are a few things that you can do before you have even left home that can help you to effectively look after your skin for your holiday. Preparation is the key to any good skincare routine. When it comes to travel, you certainly shouldn’t skimp on protecting your skin.

If you want your skin to be at its best when you are away, you must create a holiday skincare routine. This may differ from your everyday skincare routine. It can be incredibly easy to let your regular habits slip whilst you are on holiday but a well-established routine will help you to avoid this.

Look for products that will nourish and protect your skin whilst you are away, such as suncream that suits your complexion and aftersun in case you do get burnt. You should be aware of how your skin reacts to travelling and hot weather. Get into the habit of using your products every day to help prepare your skin and fix the new routine into your daily schedule.

Exfoliate

Adding regular gentle exfoliation to your routine can be a good idea. This will help by removing dead skin cells that can build up and result in blemishes or irritation. Try to do this twice a week in the run-up to your holiday. It will help to allow any products that you choose to moisturise your skin to absorb better. While you may already be used to using an exfoliation mitt for your body and limbs, you should also use a gentle facial scrub on your face.

Moisturise

Once you have exfoliated, remember to use a good-quality moisturiser that’s kind to your skin type (oily, dry, combination, etc). This will help to prepare your skin for your holiday and the added pressure you will put it under with the sun, salt or chlorinated water (depending on where you choose to swim). Also, remember that you may have reduced hydration from flying and increased alcohol consumption

Keep your skin hydrated

Keeping your skin and your body hydrated is always a good idea, whether you are on holiday or staying at home, but it is a good idea to increase hydration before you travel. Even when you follow a good skincare routine, as we have already mentioned you will find that your skin can suffer when you travel. Air travel can be particularly drying on the skin, as can a reduction in the amount of sleep that you get. The latter can easily happen on holiday if you are trying to pack as many fun things as possible into your days.   Whilst travel and harsh climates can play havoc with your skin, with a little careful planning and a great skincare routine before you travel there is plenty you can do to help keep it looking its best.

Don’t forget to enjoy your travels, apply plenty of sun protection, moisturise and keep hydrated. With these things squared away, you can put more focus on enjoying your trip!
