Teide National Park: A Stargazer’s Paradise on Tenerife

Teide National Park is undoubtedly one of the most stunning places in Tenerife. It’s especially famous for something that goes largely unnoticed during the day – the sky above.

If you appreciate a clear, star-filled night, this vast, unspoiled landscape in Tenerife is a dreamy location for stargazing.

What’s in Teide National Park?

It’s a rugged and dramatic landscape covering around 20,000 hectares. The most recognisable feature is the island’s towering volcano, Mount Teide. Standing at 3,718 metres, it’s the highest peak on Spanish soil, dominating the skyline and providing an incredible backdrop.

The park’s otherworldly terrain includes unique rock formations, lush pine forests and a variety of endemic flora and fauna. It’s a diverse environment that provides a haven for wildlife. Stunning geological features, including volcanic craters and lava fields, contribute to its UNESCO World Heritage status.

While daytime hikes offer spectacular views, the park truly comes alive as night falls, particularly if you’re there for the stars.

Why is it ideal for stargazing?

The remote location, coupled with its high altitude, makes the Teide National Park a perfect spot for seeing the stars. With little to no light pollution, it offers some of the clearest skies in Europe. As you ascend in altitude, you get an unobstructed view of the heavens.

The dry atmosphere also allows the air to be crisp and the sky to be remarkably clear. This makes for excellent visibility, making it easier to gaze at constellations or catch a glimpse of distant planets.

What you can see in the night sky

The clear, dark skies around Mount Teide reveal a dazzling array of celestial objects. It’s said you can see 83 of the 88 recognised constellations from this location, depending on when you visit.

The Milky Way stretches across the sky in a blanket of stars, and if you’re lucky, you might spot shooting stars or even the occasional meteor shower. The park is also an excellent place to view planets like Venus, Mars and Jupiter, depending on the time of year.

When planning your visit, check the lunar calendar and try to time your stargazing experiences. This way, you’ll have the best chance to view the stars without the glare of the moonlight. It’s a truly humbling experience, watching the sky unfold above you in such a remote location.

Ways to experience stargazing in the area

There are various ways to see the stars on your holiday to Tenerife. One of the best options is to take a guided stargazing tour, where local experts help you identify celestial bodies and share fascinating insights into the night sky. These tours often include the use of telescopes, allowing you to explore in greater detail.

Without a guide, you can head to Mirador de La Ruleta, an accessible viewpoint with minimal light pollution. You can also make your own way to the summit of Mount Teide, but only if you’re confident navigating in the dark.
