The team behind The Treehouses at Lanrick, five luxury sustainable treehouses in Perthshire, unveiled the stunning new woodland sauna and cold water plunge pool in Autumn 2023. Enhancing the wellness element of guests’ stays at the magnificent treehouses, and in addition to the Swedish massage therapies already on offer, these beautiful facilities provide yet more opportunity to relax, recharge and reconnect with nature.

Exposing the body to intense heat and cold in short bursts has long been considered beneficial both physical and mental health. Recently there has been a surge in interest in the UK for cold water bathing, and further evidence is emerging of the benefits of “hormesis”, the exposure of the body to small amounts of stress. Benefits can include improved circulation, joint pain relief, and increased dopamine levels leading to a sense of calm, improved mood and energy levels.

DESIGN: The striking new sauna has been carefully designed by Mallett and BAS Architects to fit organically into the natural undulations of the forest floor. The exterior structure of the sauna is built entirely from timber harvested from the property’s regenerative woodlands. Camouflaged and insulated by a green roof, complete with top soil that was a biproduct of forestry operations, and vegetation gathered from the surrounding wood floor and riverbank, it initially appears as nothing more than a small mound in the landscape. Guests enter through a delicately lit, secret door, opening up to the sleek aspen timber sauna with clean lines and a contemporary Nordic feel. Eyes are immediately drawn to the natural beauty outside, enhanced by light streaming through the floor to ceiling glass window and door leading out to a neat decking area with cold water plunge pool, overlooking the serene woodland beyond.

VISION & INSPIRATION: Simon Dickson, owner of both The Treehouses at Lanrick and the specialist design and build company, Mallett, comments: “We wanted to create a structure that would fit organically within the woodland setting, both enhancing the natural environment whilst letting users feel like they were completely immersed in the woods. Finding the perfect location was pivotal to the project. During the initial visit with the architect, Byron Bassington, we experimented by placing a bench in various spots to assess different vantage points. We ultimately selected a sloping site, which informed the design of the sauna. The shape of the sauna effortlessly melded with the forest flowing from the natural contours of the ground.”

The sauna is available for all Treehouse guests on a complimentary, first come first serve basis.

Treehouses available from £245 per night (min 2-night stay).
