How Does the E-Vignette Work in Slovenia?

You will probably use toll roads in Slovenia if you rent a car to travel the country. You must keep in mind that there are toll roads everywhere you go, whether you’re travelling up the country or even from Ljubljana to the coast.

If you travel to Slovenia, then you probably know that there used to be a vignette sticker on the front windshield that you had to use to pay for these toll roads. However, Slovenia has just started to provide electronic vignettes or also known as E-Vignettes, which makes it much easier to buy tickets online.

Therefore, if you are curious about how e-vignettes operate in Slovenia, then it’ll be good for you if you continue reading to learn more.

What is an e-vignette?

Slovenia

E-Vignette is said to be the digital version of the common vignette being used in Europe. It is an innovative method of paying for Slovenia’s toll roads for cars with a 3500 kg maximum weight limit.

To make it easier for you to understand, you must know that it isn’t all that different from the traditional vignette, which was a sticker.

However, if you buy the e-vignette online, you may be allowed to travel on all of Slovenia’s highways while the ticket is still valid.

Moving on, the vehicle’s license plate number is linked to the e-vignette. You must choose the appropriate toll class for your vehicle, plus enter the appropriate origin as well as the license plate number when you purchase the vignette.

You should also keep in mind that the driver needs to enter truthful information. This is mainly because the toll will stay unpaid if any information is inaccurate.

To add on, it took a while for the E-vignette to start. It’s important to note that starting in December 2021, you could only buy the annual as well as semi-annual vignettes. However, weekly as well as monthly e-vignettes are now accessible from February 2022.

Where can I buy an e-vignette for my vacation to Slovenia?

Slovenia

The e-vignette is still available at shops or even gas stations in Slovenia, as well as in Germany, Austria, Italy, Croatia, and indeed the Czech Republic. Visit this official sales outlet to purchase the e-vignette, then make your payment there before leaving.

You should also know that the e-vignette can be purchased up to thirty days before you plan to drive into Slovenia. Here are some Slovenian locations selling vignettes:

•           Petrol

•           MOL

•           LOGO

•           Spar

•           OMV

•           AMZS

•           Regia Group

•           Trafika 3DVA

•           Kompas Shop

Where is the e-vignette required?

Slovenia

All vehicles with a maximum allowable load of up to 3500 kilograms must access a toll road with a certified e-vignette for the accurate toll class.

This means that before entering a freeway as well as an expressway, you must purchase an e-vignette and choose the start date of its validity.

However, it is worth mentioning that all motorways, as well as expressways run by DARS, require an e-vignette, with some exceptions:

•         Gorenjska Highway (A2)

From Austria to the Hrusica intersection in the direction of Slovenia and from the Hrusica intersection to the border in the Austrian direction.

The toll for this portion which applies to the section between the initial motorway junctions on both sides of the border (the Hrusica junction in Slovenia as well as the Podroca–Rosenbach junction in Austria) is paid along with the toll for the Karavanke tunnel.

•         Expressway in Koper (H6)

Between the Koper (Semedela) junction and the H6 Koper-Lucija expressway’s terminal (in both directions). An e-vignette is not necessary to use this part of the road because the coastal road connecting Koper as well as Izola has been shut down (through the Markovic tunnel).

•         Maribor expressway (H2)

Between Pesnica and Tezno, the Maribor expressway (H2) is located. It is not included in the e-vignette toll collecting system because the road was recategorized into the regional road category.

Types of e-vignettes and their validity

You can pay tolls for using expressways as well as motorways for four different timings, during which you are free to use any toll roads.

It is also worth mentioning that you must purchase a new e-vignette for the accurate toll class when your current one expires to continue using the expressways as well as motorways. Other than that, here are the types of vignettes you should know about:

1.       Annual E-vignette

The buyer may choose a valid start date for the annual e-vignette, and it is good until the end of that day the following year.

For instance, if you buy an annual e-vignette and choose 15 April 2022 as the start time of its validity, you can use the expressways as well as motorways with this e-vignette up and until 15 April 2023 or until midnight on that date.

The only time the annual e-vignette does not apply is in leap years when the customer chooses a start date of 29 February, even though that date is not on the calendar for the following year. In those circumstances, the annual e-validity vignette expires on 28 February of the following year.

2.       Semi-annual E-vignette

Semi-annual e-vignettes are valid for six months from the opening date that the user chooses or until the final day of that month if there isn’t any such day in the 6th month.

For instance, if you choose 15 April 2022 as the semi-annual e-validity vignette’s start date, you can use the expressways and motorways with this e-vignette up to and including 15 October 2022 or until midnight on that day.

And if you choose May 31, 2022, as the validity start date, the semi-annual e-validity vignettes will end on November 30, 2022. Only the first toll class, or single-track motor vehicles, are eligible for the semi-annual e-vignette.

3.       A monthly E-vignette

The user-selected start date for a monthly e-vignette is valid until the end of that day in the month after or until the last day of this certain month if there is no such day.

For instance, if you choose 15 April 2022 as the monthly e-validity vignette’s start date, you can use motorways as well as expressways with it up to 15 May 2022, or until midnight on that day.

Additionally, if you choose May 31, 2022, as the start date for the validity, a monthly e-validity vignette will end on June 30, 2022.

4.       Weekly E-vignette

Weekly e-vignettes are valid starting on the customer-selected date for seven days straight. A weekly e-vignette is active during the first day of its validity and for the next six days because the first day of its validity always counts.

For instance, if you buy a weekly e-vignette and choose Friday, 15 April 2022, as the e-validity vignette’s start date, you can travel the expressways as well as motorways with this e-vignette only till midnight on Thursday, 21 April 2022.
