Could Mythology-Themed Tours Become Greece’s Next Major Travel Trend?

Some of the biggest movies and television shows over the years have had an influence on tourism in certain countries. For example, The Beach helped inspire more people to travel to Thailand, and The White Lotus helped generate increased interest in Sicily.

Now, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey could be set to have the same effect on Greek tourism. The country has so many settings connected to classic myths, and tourism companies could lean more heavily into selling this type of experience through themed tours.

Widespread Interest in Greek Mythology

One of the reasons why there’s so much hype surrounding Nolan’s latest film is because of the widespread interest in Greek mythology in the mainstream. The online casino industry is an excellent place to get a gauge on what’s hot, and it’s possible to find loads of Greek mythology-inspired games.

For people who enjoy a secure casino online experience, some of the leading iGaming sites have titles from well-established suppliers. These include titles such as Raging Gods: Olympus 2 and Magnificent Power Apollo from Games Global. There seems to be a strong representation of stories from this iconic culture in the casino market, highlighting how a lot of players are interested in it.

The stories of Ancient Greece have been kept alive in other areas of entertainment as well, through a variety of adaptations. On television, series such as Kaos and Blood of Zeus have given viewers new ways to experience the iconic characters.

Some Mythological Settings Already Attract a Lot of Interest

There are already several attractions in Greece that are popular because of their strong links to mythology, explored through themed tours. For example, the Acropolis is closely associated with Athena, while Delphi was believed to be the home of the famous oracle who delivered prophecies in the sanctuary of Apollo. There’s also Mount Olympus, which is the legendary home of the gods. All of these settings are obvious choices for anyone with an interest in Greek mythology.

Other settings from the classic stories are slightly harder to pin down, as they had different names or the people who wrote about them were vague. Ithaca is traditionally regarded as the home of Odysseus, but there is still debate over whether today’s island is the exact location described by Homer. That’s also true of some of the places the legendary warrior visited during his journey, which have been linked to various destinations around the Mediterranean.

How Can Tour Companies Take Advantage of The Odyssey Hype?

Despite the existing interest in mythology-themed travel in Greece, tour companies will undoubtedly want to cash in on the hype around The Odyssey this year. This could lead to new themed tours with Odysseus-inspired itineraries, taking travellers to locations connected with his journey.

There could be other experiences tied to elements of the story too. For instance, tourists may be able to go on themed boat trips or watch dramatic retellings of key parts of the story, such as Polyphemus’s capture of Odysseus and his men.

With The Odyssey expected to be a huge cultural event, it may lead more people to book holidays to Greece. Tour companies can piggyback on this hype and plan themed experiences to immerse travellers in the country’s rich mythological history.
