Luxury self catering in the heart of the Lake District
Here at H&N Yorkshire Magazine, we have an open love affair with The Lake District and have made many visits in 2018 in an attempt to bring you the best places to visit in this vast area of the country.
Everyone knows about the more famous places; Windemere, Coniston etc which we have also covered for you. However, our aim was to also bring to your attention places you might not be so familiar with and on this occasion we found ourselves in Whitbarrow Village in Penrith.
Advertised as; whether it’s a fun-filled family holiday or a romantic weekend break in the Lake District, Whitbarrow has everything you need for an indulgent getaway. From traditional cottages to luxury apartments, our collection of properties feature modern furnishings and beautiful decor, providing the perfect base for experiencing everything this beautiful part of the world has to offer.
It was a particularly cold, wet and windy weekend in late October when we visited, however our welcome to one of the wonderfully spacious Troutbeck Cottages was second to none. A luxury and modern two storey cottage, we entered in to a beautifully furnished and well equipped open plan lounge kitchen diner, with patio doors leading to a decked area where there was an outdoor hot tub, which was full, up to temperature and ready for us to jump in…which we did!
There was a fantastic welcome hamper of the basic essentials such as bread, milk, butter, bacon and eggs; plus a bottle of champagne on ice and some rather delicious chocolates! The champagne made it in to the hot tub with us. Beggar the awful weather, we were off to a fantastic start. Before we hit the hot tub, we did a bit of exploring of our accommodation. On the first floor there was a master double bedroom with en-suite bathroom comprising of a bath and rainfall shower and personal terrace. One sumptuous twin and one children’s bunk room (complete with a kids den) and a family bathroom with bath and rainfall shower.
We then wrapped up warm and took ourselves off to find our bearings in the village. We located the leisure facilities, complete with indoor heated pool and splash pool, Jacuzzi, sauna, steam room and gym, the Eden Bar and Restaurant where we were to dine that evening and all of the other brilliant activities available; crazy golf, giant chess board, putting green, games room, Frisbee golf and even a duck pond where there seemed to be a million ducks all begging to be fed!
Back in our cosy cottage we were suddenly aware that we had been followed…by about 20 of the ducks from the duck pond! They were obviously intelligent enough to recognise the new comers would have lots of bread! They were to be regular visitors over the weekend, especially at breakfast time when they did a full tour of each cottage in the village, they even came inside at times for a more personal visit.
The next day we were booked to do a trip on Ullswater Steamers which took us a full journey around the lake, stopping at various jetties where you could disembark to explore or stay on for the full round trip.
Ullswater Steamers is an award winning, environmentally accredited Lake District attraction, celebrating over 150 years of operating cruises on England’s most beautiful lake. We sailed through spectacular mountain landscape and it would have been perfect for a lovely spring or summer’s day. However on the day we took the tour it poured with rain the whole day. We braved the elements on the first half of the journey but succumbed to the indoor bar for the second half, just to get warm you understand. Our second night we spent chilling in the cottage, we ate a lovely home-cooked dinner, drank lots of wine, played silly games and watched one of the many films on offer on the giant TV.
On closer inspection the next day, we discovered that Whitbarrow Village, (winner of Cumbria Tourism Award for Self-Catering Holiday Provider of the Year), also has stunning Farmhouse Apartments, amongst the best in the Lake District. Choosing one of the Farmhouse Apartments, you have your own private terrace complete with hot tub.
All too soon our visit was at an end, but we hope that we have given you a little inspiration to venture to other parts of this beautiful area of The Lakes, kick off your shoes and sink into the bathtub after a long day of exploring the surrounding countryside, or take in the sights and sounds over a glass of wine on a summer’s evening. However you choose to spend your time at Whitbarrow Village, you can rest assured that you have everything you need for an indulgent getaway or a family adventure.
