Top Places to Visit This Autumn

Wondering where to go for the perfect autumn break? So were we and of course we went straight to our favourite travel agent, Idle Travel to ask.

I’m not sure which destinations we were expecting, a couple of these took us by surprise, until we found out what each has to offer making them the perfect places to visit this autumn. Here’s why…

Rome

Autumn is a great time to visit Rome because the city is buzzing and back in full swing after the summer break, giving you a good picture of daily life in the city. Fares are also lower and hotels will often offer low season prices starting in November so it’s a great time to save on both time and money in the city.

Rome is brimming with attractions, including ancient ruins like the Roman Forum, Renaissance art in the Vatican Museums and architectural wonders like the Pantheon. Don’t miss the charming streets of Trastevere or the breathtaking views from the Spanish Steps while you are there. Rome is certainly one of the top places to visit this autumn.

Krakow

At this time of year, the trees turn orange and red and temperatures hardly reach the negative peaks of winter. Therefore, visiting Krakow in autumn is ideal!

Autumn in Krakow can be spectacular. The trees turn spactacular colours, bringing beautiful muted hues across the cityscape. Leaves begin to drop and the air has a crispness about it that you can’t feel at other times of the year.

Autumn in Krakow continues to be a vibrant and happening season to enjoy the city. You’ll still be able to enjoy al fresco dining. There are outdoor bars bumping along the river and on Vistula boats and there’s also a vibrant nightlife to experience.

Budapest

Autumn is the harvest season, so enjoy the fresh food and good wine. The annual Budapest Wine Festival is held in the beginning of September at the Buda Castle. Sample wines while enjoying breathtaking views of the Danube and Chain Bridge.

See the colours of foliage change by visiting Budapest’s impeccable parks. Stroll around giant sculptures of Lenin, Marx and Engels at Memento Park and head to the tiny Margaret Island in the middle of the Danube to see Japanese Garden Acer trees transforming from vivid scarlet to burnt ochre.

Enjoy a tipple or two at the Italian Riesling Festival in October, where over 200 Rhine and Italian Rieslings will battle it out to win the coveted first place prize. For fans of French red wine, try the Bordo Great Tasting in November. To savour a taste of local grapes matched with artisanal cheeses, head to the New Wine and Cheese Festival in the historic Vajdahunyad Castle. It’s a magical time of year for foodies!

Barcelona

Barcelona is a fantastic city to visit any time of the year, and some of the best months are during autumn. The weather is warm, the atmosphere is lively but not crowded and there are events happening throughout the whole season.

In October the Bavarian tradition of Oktoberfest comes to Barcelona! Enjoy live polka bands, DJs, food, festivities, and beer of course! Sitges Film Festival is dedicated to fantasy and horror films and is one of the highlights of the autumn calendar. Barcelona’s edition of a worldwide event, 48H Open House is a celebration of the city’s fascinating architecture. All happening in October.

In November, on the first day, celebrate All Saints Day, this religious festival and a public holiday, is one of the cultural highlights of autumn in Barcelona. Wander the city streets while snacking on small round almond cakes called “panellets” or toasted chestnuts known as “castanyas” and admire the many floral displays for sale.

Visit La Rambla: lined with interesting shops and great restaurants, and known for buskers, La Rambla is Barcelona’s most famous street. Stroll along and soak up the many sights and sounds.

This is a mere snapshot of the many reasons to visit these four stunning places in autumn. For more information you need to speak with Tony and his team of travel experts at Idle Travel
