We sent our writer Rachel McAlley to explore the beauty and surroundings of Crathorne Hall Hotel in Yarm, North Yorkshire.
Driving down the winding road lead me to the staggeringly beautiful stately home, Crathorne Hall Hotel, nestled just outside the North Yorkshire Moors.
The hotel, by Hand Picked Hotels is a grand AA four Red Star inspector’s choice country house hotel. Set in 15 acres of well manicured gardens and grounds, and offers 37 bedrooms for guests.
At the main doors of the hotel there was a helpful note with covid rules, and a sanitising unit for guests. More importantly, I also found hand sanitiser stations dotted around the hotel at numerous locations.
I walked past a few stately rooms where guests were enjoying afternoon tea, and having small meetings. It was then time to check into reception.
The reception team was friendly, welcoming, and warm. This was a great introduction to the hotel.
A lift and a small set of stairs took me to my second floor bedroom, with views that overlooked the vast lawn and far reaching hills. I even spotted a sign in the garden for a woodland walk.
Up on the second floor the bedroom was spacious, with its own adjoining dressing room. The bed was king sized and the desk was ample to work from, with free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.
Dinner was served in The Leven Restaurant, a large open room with excellent social distancing measures in place. Salt and pepper squid had my name all over it for the first course, with pickled cucumber, chilli and lemon mayo. Plenty to choose for the second course, I opted for locally caught Whitby crab in linguini with garlic, chilli, spring onion and garden peas. My third and final course of the day was an assiette of coffee, including mini brûlé, syrup sponge, quenelle of ice cream, and granita.
In conclusion, the best dish of the evening was the main course crab linguini as it was full of flavour. Moreover, there was just a hint of chilli and garlic, both complimenting the crab perfectly.
Back in the hotel room I spent the rest of the evening working from my laptop before heading to bed, where I had an excellent sleep.
There was an option to have breakfast in my room, which I pre-ordered the night before. The Crathorne Healthy Breakfast; a tray filled with fresh fruit, granola and yoghurt, avocado and poached eggs on toast, mint tea, and juice. It was the perfect wakeup.
Once my suitcase was packed I watched a little morning TV, before heading to check out of the hotel. After dropping my luggage at the car, I took some time strolling along the Crathorne Hall Woodland Walk, which is a wildlife and bird watchers paradise.
In short, I enjoyed every minute at Crathorne Hall Hotel, from checking in right through to my walk around the gardens, before embarking on the road trip home. Would I recommend a weekend trip to Crathorne Hall Hotel? Yes, I most certainly would.
