In the Lake District, surrounded by twinkling waters and stunning mountains you will find Tarka Holt, a bespoke collection of six stunning luxury lodge holiday homes set in beautifully landscaped gardens and overlooking Otter Lake.
A sanctuary away from home, the Lake District’s twinkling waters and stunning mountains make it a popular and picturesque retreat. Tarka Holt, in Lakeland (the Lake District’s local nickname), is based close (20 minute drive) to one of the most striking lakes, Windermere; a great location for exploration.
When we were invited to spend a weekend at one of the super luxurious lodges at Tarka Holt, we literally jumped at the chance. The Lake District is always an attractive prospect for a weekend away, but spending it in one of these beauties is a different experience altogether. The lodges are located on Lakeland Leisure Park, situated in Flookburgh, South Lake District. Just a stones throw from the pretty promenades of Grange-Over-Sands and a ten minute car journey from the idyllic village of Cartmel, home to Michelin Star chef Simon Rogan’s restaurant L’Enclume and of course the most famous sticky toffee pudding in possibly the world, not forgetting a cracking racecourse!
The park itself is extensive and as we wound our way through the well manicured gardens on a glorious June day, it was clear there would be plenty to entertain us on our mini break. From the adventure park on the way in complete with with zip line, to the crazy golf, outdoor pool and poolside bar. We also noted tennis courts, an indoor pool and plenty of playground facilities. But that’s nothing compared to the absolutely superb views over Otter Lake that awaited us as we parked up and took in our accommodation for the next two days. The lodges are nothing if not impressive to say the very least. We stayed in a three bedroom version, set slightly back from the lake. The lake front lodges boast private pontoons with direct access to the lake.
The open plan living layout of the lodges make a real statement. The vaulted roof means high ceilings and I loved the complete glass front opening up onto the decking from both the sitting room and dining kitchen, both of which were simply delightful. Airy and bright with super high quality fixtures and fittings. The bedrooms were so inviting and luxurious, the master complete with beautiful en suite and piping hot power shower.
Literally – POWER shower. The twin room as the other two rooms, were all complete with flat screen televisions and plenty of storage in the shape of fitted wardrobes and freestanding furniture, all of which is beautifully made and fitted, in keeping the beachy theme of our particular lodge.
So time to explore. Heading out from the lodge towards the sun drenched lake we spotted the resident swans with their huddle of cygnets sailing majestically across the waters, unbelievably followed by a family on a pedalo! There is a wealth of water sports available on the lake, try your hand at kayaking, paddle boarding and canoeing – all with trained instructors. Water sports not really being our thing we headed for guess what – you got it, the bar! Otter Lodge is the park’s exclusive owners lounge and as we found out, the perfect place to relax. There is a fairly wide range of breakfast, lunch and dinner options to enjoy, the decking outside offers stunning views of the lake and we enjoyed sipping our way through a bottle of wine and taking in our surroundings. This really is a superb way to enjoy the Lake District.
There are lots of organised events held at the lodge exclusively for the owners and their families to enjoy. From live music and themed evenings, to wine club events, fun experience days and even an annual Summer party.
After lunch we took a stroll along the bay, and enjoyed the views of the surrounding scenery. There were plenty of like minded people doing the same, and with so many paths and trails in and around the park there is plenty to explore. Across the park there are lots of facilities that both holiday makers and owners alike can enjoy. The main indoor pool offers lots of organised activities especially for children, it did look like everybody was having a fantastic time as we strolled by. There is also an indoor heated pool, spa and gym exclusively for owners which seemed more serene! So really there is something for everybody and you can dive into all the adventure or simply retreat to the lodge and enjoy the peace and absolute serenity of this lakeside location.
