Everybody loves the city of York, steeped in history and renowned for its stunning architecture, it has long been a popular tourist destination.
But have you ever enjoyed the sights sipping a glass of fizz whilst cruising gently along the Ouse?
Just a couple of weeks ago, my family and I were lucky enough to cruise along the beautiful River Ouse with City Cruises York, experiencing their fantastic afternoon tea package.
On a fresh crisp sunny afternoon, the family wrapped up warm and took to the river to appreciate the sites of York from a unique perspective whilst being guided by the Captain, James Cook on City Cruises York. The Skipper had an insightful knowledge of the city and its history, narrating during the journey with a good balance of information mixed with relaxing background music in between.
The cruise took a little less than two hours and was a perfect way to view the hidden sites that York has to offer, sailing through the city and then downstream to Bishopthorpe Palace, the stunning riverside residence of His Grace the Archbishop of York.
The afternoon tea provided a tempting array of traditional, fresh crustless finger sandwiches with tasty fillings, we enjoyed smoked salmon, cream cheese and chives, egg mayonnaise with cress, Wensleydale cheese and apple chutney and the obligatory coronation chicken (very tasty). This was followed by an even more drool worthy selection of homemade cream cakes, pastries and scones with clotted cream and jam as well as unlimited tea and coffee accompanied by a nice glass of fizz.
Our children got stuck in and really enjoyed all of the treats too, which as any parent will know, comes as a relief when you are out and about.
They even had the chance to visit the head of the boat to see all the action – well, ok, not so much action but still they seemed to enjoy having a chat with the captain.
At £25 per head this is a great way to spend some time with the family and ticks all the boxes; good food, fun and educational. Sailing regularly from April to October.
Throughout the Christmas period City Cruises York are also offering the Santa experience, perfect for children and the Christmas party night’s package. Your Santa experience begins as you are welcomed into the Grotto, cleverly hidden away underneath the beautiful Lendal Bridge.
You will be warmly greeted by Santa’s good friend Mary Christmas who will show you to your reserved seating and distribute the magic bells. We don’t want to tell you too much more as that would spoil the magic. But we can guarantee that Santa Claus himself will find his way aboard and the whole family will have the most wonderful time.
Furthermore, if you are planning a function, charity event or even a wedding reception, City Cruises York fleet can accommodate from 20 to 120 people and provide a totally unique backdrop for your special occasion, especially given the spectacular sights that York has in abundance. What better way to make an impression than a venue with ever changing scenery?
