Cultural collaborations continue at The Refuge on May Bank Holiday weekend from Friday 25th to Monday 27th May. Manchester’s iconic hangout, The Refuge will welcome a Whitworth Gallery takeover, Urban Decay masterclasses, Stitched Up’ ‘wardrobe surgery’, Our Kid’s Social family activities and yoga from Lululemon – all taking place over late May Bank Holiday weekend.
Curated by Luke Cowdrey and Justin Crawford, the revered DJs-turned-restauranteurs, The Refuge aims to offer a weekend of music, arts, culture and entertainment for those who choose not to leave the city during the bank holiday, by providing them with the ultimate destination to celebrate the weekend in style.
To leadoff the weekend, on Saturday 25th May, The Whitworth Art Gallery will bring the gallery in the park to the beautiful surroundings of The Refuge. This will be an inspired recreation of the gallery, in The Den and The Courtyard of The Refuge. Guests will be given the opportunity to engage in artist-led activities for all the family. Activities will include: bringing artwork to life in 3-D and Live Art with face painters, all inspired by the Whitworth Collections.
Our Kid’s Social will again be returning to the venue with an eclectic array of fun and games for children throughout the weekend from 10am – 12pm in The Courtyard. These will include lino printing, circus activities and mobile storytelling. An exciting way to involve all the family.
Onwards to Sunday 26th May, The Basement will be turned into a Stitched Up Clothes Swap and Wardrobe Surgery the Manchester based non-profit cooperative workshop offering skills and resources for sustainable style. Therefore, entry is free but donations to Forever Manchester are welcome. So, bring along up to 10 of your unworn or unwanted items of clothing to The Refuge on Sunday to swap them for new-to-you garms or fix them up at the alterations bar, to refresh your wardrobe the eco-friendly way!
Part of ‘Our Friends Electrik’, Sunday will see a make-up masterclasses and pop up shop from Urban Decay. There will be three expert classes throughout the day, taking place in The Den:
- 11am: Disco masterclass – add a little glitz and glam with bright eyes, or a hit of glitter
- 1pm: Smokey masterclass – learn how to create the ultimate smoky-eye; a timeless classic in the world of beauty
- 3pm: Less is more masterclass – expert tips for simple but super effective styles
The price is £10 per place on the masterclasses, redeemable on the day against products on display (student & make-up artist discount available with I.D.).
Alongside this, sonic sensations will be provided by Dr Sid’s Summer Riviera with Lord Chester and Dom Blood & Fire in The Courtyard and Public Bar. Encompassing sounds of lounge, Latin, cocktail jazz, jumped up jive, swing, exotica, roots and reggae – the perfect summer soundtrack supplied by The Refuge’s residents to savour in the surroundings of Waterhouse Way.
Finally, to conclude the bank holiday extravaganza, on Monday 27th May, Lululemon will host a spectacular yoga session in The Winter Garden at 11:30am for all levels. Famous for their high energy and uplifting fitness and wellbeing events, the international brand will be welcoming leading yogi Jen Possami to teach a calming flow with warming Indian vibes. Sign up and registration for this first-come-first-serve session will be available through Eventbrite, and you must bring your own yoga mat.
