What a treat to be in London during December, with all the wonderful Christmas trees, festive decorations, and stunning streetlights that are dotted around the city.

H&N Magazine’s Rachel McAlley was invited to spend the night at Strand Palace Hotel, located on The Strand.

The Strand runs parallel to the River Thames and it connects Westminster to the City, so it’s always a busy part of London, especially as it’s in the heart of theatreland in the West End and is adjacent to Covent Garden.

Strand Palace has recently undergone an extensive refurbishment to their superior rooms and deluxe rooms, which have all been kitted out with Hypnos mattresses, air conditioning, and complimentary high-speed Wi-Fi, the hotel is now undertaking a full refurbishment of all the remaining rooms, with minimal disturbance to guests.


Rachel checked in to one of the new spacious deluxe rooms, which also included a complimentary fully stocked mini bar complete with wine, beer, soft drinks, water, crisps, chocolate, biscuits and other nibbles. There was also a Nespresso coffee machine alongside a generous selection of teas, coffees, hot chocolate and fresh milk.

The spacious bedroom boasted a king-sized bed, large flat screen TV, art deco table with relaxing chair and tall floor lamp, an excellent sized wardrobe with drawers, and all the amenities that you would expect in a high-end room including iron and ironing board, shoe shine kit, dressing gowns, slippers and hairdryer.

The bathroom, although small in size offered a good selection of bathroom products by The White Company, a decent sized shower, and wonderfully fluffy towels.


There are a couple of good eateries in the hotel including Haxells Restaurant and Bar, and Joe Allen New York Style Brasserie, both located on the ground floor alongside The Gin Palace, which is the prefect venue for pre-theatre cocktails.


Rachel dined at Haxells for a taste of modern British cuisine, where the chefs have a passion for provenance and local UK produce, using top-quality ingredients. She opted for creamy burrata and heritage tomato salad to start, and followed the salad with cod and salmon fishcake with rocket and dill sour cream, plus a side order of thick cut chips, and she finished with sticky toffee pudding.

The dish that stood out the most was the hearty sized fishcake, it was perfectly cooked and the flavours of both salmon and cod were in abundance, the delicate dill sour cream was an excellent accompaniment.


Then it was time to walk off dinner and enjoy an hour looking at the Christmas lights around Covent Garden.

After a really great night’s sleep at Strand Palace it was time for breakfast, served at Haxells. There is such a vast breakfast on offer at Strand Palace including continental choices of cheese, meat, salad, fruit, yoghurts, pastries and much more, plus a full array of hot foods from sausages and bacon to hash browns, eggs, toast and more.

The staff are constantly topping up tea and coffee and are happy to advise you on the different breakfast options available. Nothing is too much to ask of any member of staff at the hotel.

Strand Palace is a wonderful hotel, located in the heart of the city, with excellent amenities, great restaurants and seriously good bedrooms. Would H&N Magazine recommend staying overnight at this London hotel, yes we certainly would.
