Nestled in the heart of Fitzrovia you will find Il Sud, a brand-new Italian restaurant and bar bringing unfussy, homely Italian cuisine to London.

Aptly translated to ‘The South’ Il Sud perfectly encapsulates the southern hemisphere of Italy through their rich flavours, traditional dishes and communal dining experience.

Known for their love and passion for deep and heavy profiles, Il Sud has managed to not only capture the essence of Italy but add a touch of modern elegance.

IL SUDExpect an extensive yet unpretentious wine menu paired to your choice of meat-and-cheese-laden pasta, risotto of various flavours and main cutlet dishes. Starters come in the form of burrata, fresh seasonal vegetables and seafood straight from Apulia and the dessert menu has stolen the heart of Italy and brought it straight to the city with affogato, homemade classic tiramisu and an artisanal cheese platter, or my absolute favourite – traditional Italian Gelato.

The décor itself is cosy, but light and modern with stainless steel accents on every corner and an open gantry with a hard at work staff tirelessly prepping away dishes from scratch with meticulous detail – just like mama used to make. And with all dietary requirements catered for, you are truly in for a treat.

Wanting to showcase real southern Italy staples, Il Sud was created by old friends Luca and Vittorio, who hold a wealth of IL SUDexperience in both the hospitality and Italian dining industry and is set to become the go-to for both lavish celebrations and intimate gatherings. Co-founder Luca commented that ‘they do not mess about when it comes to food’ and they truly stand by that statement. From the moment we walked in the door of the brand-new restaurant we felt immediately at home. Greeted by the attentive staff and walked through the menu, the entire meal from start to finish was to the highest standard and we are already looking at booking our next table.

IL SUDHead Chef Vittorio, who previously worked at Cacio and Pepe with Luca in Pimlico has hand-crafted their menu to celebrate seasonal ingredients such as Romanesco broccoli, stuffed courgette flowers and pan-fried seabass. The ever-so charming Luca who runs the front of house has carefully curated the drinks list, featuring some of their most loved wines from some of Italy’s best vineyards in Tuscany, Sicily and Puglia and finished with three different grappa’s and Luca’s (and now my) favourite, Amaro Montenegro – a 40 botanical brandy that is the perfect after-dinner drink.

If the hand-made pasta, extra gratings of Bottarga and the intensely warm ambience isn’t enough – each table can dine on IL SUDolives, focaccia and exceedingly good double-dip worthy olive-oil, on the house. Their set menu, available Monday to Saturday 12:00 – 18:00 is £14 for 2 courses or £18 for 3 courses and with a la carte dishes ranging from £12 to £21 for mains the price is incredibly reasonable for the level of service and quality you receive.

Il Sud is determined to bring good old-fashioned Italian hospitality to the residents, workers and visitors of the bustling Fitzrovia and we are all here for it, it’s a 10/10 from us.
