It’s 2019 – Happy New Year!
This is the time of year that encourages us to reflect and plan for new beginnings.
Often this involves engaging in a new fitness regime, trying a new hobby or sticking to the latest diet.
This year why not turn the attention to your mindset and bring about positive change which will lead you down the path of success.
Here are top ten tips for creating a positive, happy and successful future:-
Wake up and choose happy
Make a deliberate choice to feel happy every single morning. Happiness is a state of mind and it’s something you can decide to be. When you wake up whisper ‘I am really happy today’ to yourself and reinforce it throughout the day by telling everyone you meet that you feel fabulous.
Make the most of Monday
Blue Monday needn’t be a thing. Happiness Expert, Doctor Andy Cope reminds us that we spend a 7th of our life living on Mondays so don’t they deserve a bit more love? Stop dreading them and instead make the absolute most of them. When life gives you a Monday, dip it in glitter, get out there and sparkle.
Giving makes us feel great so make it a mission to give to others. You might offer your time to babysit for a single parent or mow the lawn of an elderly neighbour. You could drop food at a local foodbank or buy a coffee for a homeless person. Whatever you choose, do what you can and do it often to give you a boost of feel-good emotions.
You might not have millions of pounds, a fancy house or a flash car, but whatever you have, be grateful. Actively practicing gratitude, even when you have very little is scientifically proven to reduce toxic emotions of envy, resentment and greed. Research by Robert Emmons, a leading gratitude researcher concludes that being grateful increases happiness and reduces depression so what have you got to lose? Write down three things you are grateful for every night before going to bed.
When your inner critic strikes it can be difficult to stay focussed. This voice inside your head does not have your best interests at heart. Once you know this you can choose to ignore it and to dilute its toxicity, reframe the negative thoughts by thinking of the direct opposite and saying this out loud. If the inner critic tells you that you are fat and lazy, reframe it and repeat ‘I look and feel great and I am full of energy.’
Make an appointment with You
Allow yourself some ‘me time’ to spend in a coffee shop, reading a book, walking or simply ‘being’. Block out the time in your schedule and make it a recurring appointment. Make the time non-negotiable. This simple act of self-care will see your self-respect soar as it reinforces how much you value your time and how much you deserve to be your top priority.
Stop the Snooze
So much time is lost after the alarm sounds. The lure of the snooze button can see precious minutes frittered away. STOP! As soon as the alarm sounds adopt Mel Robbin’s 54321 technique.
Switch off the alarm, count backwards from 5, stand up and start your day. You will be amazed how much more productive you will be.
Focus on what you want
If you want to achieve something, visualise it happening. Often, we place all of attention on the things we don’t want and the unconscious mind translates this as our desired outcome and so delivers it. If you want to lose weight, imagine yourself as a slim person rather than focussing on the fact that you are fatter than you want to be.
Celebrate everything you achieve
No matter how small or insignificant your achievements seem, give yourself a pat on the back. Don’t let anything you do slip through the net. You deserve the accolades and there is no greater recognition than that given to yourself.
Believe you can
The mind can’t tell the difference between what happens in reality and what is imagined with intensity so believe with every fibre of your being that you can be a success and it will be. Believe it until you become it.
