Whilst many of us (myself included) chose to spend much of lockdown wallowing in Netflix, booze, self-pity and vast amounts of fast food, a trio of pals decided to invest their time more wisely and created a brand. Enter Zhú Spiced Rum, a UK produced liquor that draws inspiration from East Asia.
Officially launched on Friday 5th March, Zhú sets itself apart from the competition with a unique flavour profile designed to shake up your tastebuds and liven up cocktails. We received a bottle just ahead of the brand drop and have so far been impressed with the nectar-coloured tipple.
Top notes of star anise and cinnamon and are carefully balanced with cloves, fennel, and Szechuan peppercorn to create a pleasing five-spice flavour bomb that commands repeat sips. Another key ingredient is bamboo, which is where the guys found their brand name (Zhú means bamboo).
This makes it perfect for creating a spicy rum and coke or giving your favourite rum cocktails an exotic twist. It’s also incredible on the rocks with a wedge of lime, which is how we first experienced Zhú.

The lads behind Zhú, Ciaran, Harry and Eurico, have poured their heart and soul into the project, which all began when the friends were chatting. Eurico said:
‘’This was one of those classic group chat ideas that has escalated into something beautiful. We have taken great pleasure crafting our own personalities into a brand that reflects our friendship into an experience we believe many will enjoy. They closed the bars; we made a rum.’’
Zhú is manufactured in the UK using a painstakingly meticulous distillation process that results in a smoother drinking experience than that of your average rum. Add to that a beautifully designed bottle that you can proudly display on your home bar, and you’ve got a recipe for success.
With summer 2021 poised to be a non-stop party (everything crossed), we predict big things for Zhú, who are already displaying the hallmarks of a serious industry disruptor. You heard it here first.
