The Idle Draper is the first micro pub in Idle village, Bradford. Built over 2 floors in the former premises of Briggs draper’s shop, the building is steeped in local history and after laying empty for many years, it has been lovingly restored to its former glory by owner and local builder, Jim Emmett.
When Jim acquired the building, he says it was like stepping back in time, with much of the stock and equipment still there from when this was a men’s outfitters. Jim has kept many of the original features and even displays some of the historical pieces he found there, giving a nod to the buildings past and creating a unique micro pub over 3 floors. The way in which Jim has restored and furnished The Idle Draper, all pay a respectful homage to the history of this wonderful building.
We asked Jim to tell us about what customers can expect to find at The Idle Draper; “We have an extensive range of premium draught lagers and stouts along with a permanently changing line up of craft ales sourced locally. Our Gin menu is second to none along with mixers designed to make the most of the drink selected. We have an expertly selected wine list along with a fridge supplying beers from around the world, and our hospitality is a true, honest and very warm Yorkshire welcome.”
Such is Jim’s love and passion for this building, he recently invested a further £12,000 in professional brewing equipment and has transformed the building behind in to a micro-brewery where anyone can come along and brew their own beer. Welcome to Bone Idle Brewery!
Bone Idle Brewery is a fantastic idea and something we think is going to catch on very quickly. Brewing your own beer has to be the perfect thing for a group of friends, a stag party, or hens for that matter, to do. Where else can you go and brew your own professional casks, (to be drunk in The Idle Draper). What a fantastic experience and what a brilliant surprise gift.
However, Bone idle Brewery is so much more than a micro-brewery. Outside its entrance is a beer garden and once inside the brewery, the ground floor is home to the spectacular brewing equipment, plus beers on tap to enjoy while you go through the brewing process.
Upstairs is a mezzanine floor with comfy sofas and seating and a giant screen, complete with a state of the art sound system. Here, you and your group of friends can enjoy a movie, play video games or even just sit and enjoy a few drinks and a bite to eat while your brew takes shape. This area is fully heated and carpeted and also makes the perfect venue for groups of up to 6 people. It also lends itself perfectly to small meetings and team building days.
Jim also has another passion, raising awareness of men’s struggle with mental health issues and he has introduced The Bone Idle Men’s Club, held every Wednesday evening from 7pm, held on the mezzanine floor of the brewery. This fantastic idea provides a warm welcoming, safe and relaxed environment for local men to meet. They can chat freely while there or simply watch a film or play games. Tea, coffee and biscuits are provided free of charge.
We wanted to know what motivated Jim to set up The Bone Idle Men’s Club and he told us; “Men’s mental health has always been a taboo subject because of the perceived stigma and associated weakness of opening up about such things.
In all honesty, most men have struggled to cope from time to time and I believe this is because we are not encouraged to talk. I have lost a couple of close friends recently through depression, loneliness and mental health issues and feel sure that if only they had a safe environment to meet other sufferers, share their troubles and experiences, it could have made all the difference and they would still be here today. There’s no counsellors here, just a listening ear and mutual support.
The single biggest killer of men under 45 is suicide, 42% of men aged 18 to 45 will have contemplated taking their own life and it’s time to change this! Conversation can offer great support and an emotional outlet and this is what we are offering every Wednesday.”
What a fantastic asset The Idle Draper is to the community of the village of Idle, on so many different levels. If you haven’t yet visited The Idle Draper, make sure you do very soon, it’s a fabulous place and one you will want to become a regular at.
