Odeon Luxe Thrope Park review

When I heard the news that Leeds was getting an Odeon Luxe, I’ll be the first to admit I was a little underwhelmed. What would make this place so different from Vue? Turns out I was wrong, and word of mouth began to spread about just how awesome this place was. I had to go.

Opening at The Springs Retail Park in April, this brand-new cinema packs the latest state-of-the-art technology, along with a fully-stocked bar and luxurious seating. Ticket prices come at a premium, but turned out to be worth every penny.

We arrived to see Disney’s Lion King, which is one of many remakes the studio has been pumping out of late. As a big fan of the original, I’ll admit I was sceptical about this film, but we’ll get to that later.

The bar area is huge, and stocks a wide range of spirits and mixers, as well as cider and draught lager. As someone who begrudges shelling out for warm bottled beer in multiplex cinemas, the opportunity to buy a moderately priced pint was very much welcome. All the staff were fantastic too, which is rare in large multiplex cinemas.

Our film was showing in ISENSE, which is said to be the ultimate way to watch movies. The technology used combines 4k projection with Dolby ATMOS 3D sound and an optimised screen, which promised to create an all-immersive, sensory experience. Turns out the hype is real.

This cinema experience was a real jaw-dropper. The Lion King is largely CGI, but it looked exceptionally clear and realistic when presented in ISENSE. The floor-to-ceiling screen makes for the perfect movie canvas, and the 3D sound was noticeably better than your average movie theatre.

Add to this the comfiest electric reclining seats, which go back so far you could quite easily nod off, and this is one badass cinema. As for the film, despite the stunning visuals and enhanced sound quality, this remake was something of a bore. Disney have lifted each scene and almost every word from the original to the point where I was in a constant state of déjà-vu. It’s soulless.

That said, kids will love it and I don’t think Disney had 30-something guys in mind when they decided to remake one of their signature films. Film aside, Odeon Luxe is an absolute blast and a must for anyone that loves movies. I’ll be back in a few weeks to check out Tarantino’s latest for sure.
