Glowing cocktails and a glowing reputation.
Leeds light night is the UK’s largest annual arts and light festival during which some of the city’s most iconic indoor and outdoor spaces are transformed by local, national and international artists.
From spectacular light projections and interactive installations, to music, dance and street performances, it’s the perfect way to enjoy the city that we know and love from a totally different viewpoint.
Fortunately, the bars and restaurants in Leeds are more than happy to join in with the fun too. We were invited to The Ivy Victoria Quarter to sample their limited edition light night cocktails, crafted by their very talented resident mixologist Jamie Twigg.
The Ivy is possibly one of the most visually captivating Brasseries that you will find in Leeds. The bright, alluring décor inspired by the natural world is a real juxtaposition when compared to the exterior of the listed building on the corner of Vicar Lane. It is completely luxurious in it’s eccentricity, whilst maintaining an air of good old-fashioned British silver-service formality. We grabbed a seat at the bar and got chatting to Jamie about the two specially created light night inspired cocktails.
Firstly there’s the Illuminated Ivy – a shorter cocktail (about as big as a whisky sour) with Belle de Brillet Pear Liqueur, Wyborowa vodka, Pear Puree, Lemon juice and egg white. It’s stunning to look at, with the Ivy logo dusted on top. If you like your cocktails tart and full of fruity flavour, this one very well might be for you.
The second limited edition creation is the Aviation Illumination – a slightly longer cocktail served in an upside-down lightbulb style glass. This is a mixture of Briottet créme de violet, dried lavender, lemon, Beefeater gin and Luxardo maraschino liqueur. This was my personal favourite of the two, it was very floral-forward in taste but this worked perfectly with the sweetness of the maraschino liquor.
The grand finale? Small LED’s hidden in the bottom of the glasses that make the cocktails glow as you sit back and enjoy! If you have missed the opportunity to grab one of these limited edition creations, I implore you to head down to the Ivy Victoria Quarter to try any one of the other cocktails featured on their extensive drinks menu. You won’t be disappointed.
